We already know our roads are polluted because scientists at Kings College are telling us. They monitor the air in key London locations and then produce precise models showing the extent of air pollution on maps. http://www.londonair.org.uk/london/asp/annualmaps.asp
But we wanted to know exactly how bad the pollution is around us in South Hackney. So we contacted Client Earth who put diffusion tubes (small glass tubes) up in playgrounds and streets around Gayhurst, London Fields, Lauriston and Orchard Primary Schools to measure nitrogen dioxide levels. These are coming down on Friday 24 October 2014. It will take two weeks to get the results so we think around Monday 10 November 2014 we should know. Watch out on these two dates as we will be letting newspapers know what we want to achieve.
We are also working with School Councils to talk to them about steps they can take to avoid air pollution- this will be the Clean Air Action Plan. School Councils will then think of ways to tell other children in their schools and parents.
Please email us if you think your school council would be interested.
